Reasons for Not Ranking on Google

We all know how important it is to rank high on a Search Engine Results Page (SERP) – especially on Google. For many, ranking high with Google is the ‘holy grail' of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – and it should be. Google is still the most popular search engine, by far. It should come as no surprise that many people tailor their SEO efforts to Google specifically.  They are often confused and frustrated to find that after all that work, their site is still not ranking on Google. So why?

First, it is important to realize what you are hoping to achieve. Google is the single largest search engine. Its index includes over 50 billion websites – a number that is growing each day. Making your website stand out to this megalith is no small feat. In fact, it is one that many people never manage to achieve. That being said, there are some critical search engine optimization factors that can cause your site to be overlooked by Google.

First, no tricks please.  Forget all the black-hat stuff.  It's a waste of time and always ends badly.

Second, carefully review Google's requirements. Signup for the Google Webmaster Tools and read the information provided there.  If you read it, understand it and really take it to heart, you will remove many of the reasons why many don't rank on Google.  Everybody says they want to be on page 1 but precious few are willing to make the necessary commitments to hard work, quality work, etc to actually achieve page 1 rankings.

After keeping all of this in mind, there are several things you can do to make your site more appealing to Google's spiders. These include:

Dynamic Sitemaps:  Google loves sites with sitemaps – they not only tell your visitors how to get around, sitemaps provide the organization structure and relevance of your website i.e. what exactly the site is all about and how it is presented.
Submit it:  Many new webmasters don't realize they can submit their site for inclusion. Don't forget this step. Spiders will crawl a site without submission, but it may be a quicker way of getting indexed. The quickest way is to install a dynamic site map so that every time you add or change content, Google will receive an updated sitemap speeding up the indexing process markedly. Google, Yahoo and Bing all have tools for webmasters to submit their sites and sitemaps.
Keywords:  Do the research.  Don't assume you know your keywords because you most probably don't. Research is a key step. Use tools like Google Trends, Google Keyword Tool and if you can spare a couple of bucks, Word tracker.
Content:  This is the everlasting commitment that you absolutely must make if you are serious about ranking on Google.  You need to constantly add new articles, blog posts and press releases.  You also need to learn how to syndicate this content effectively on the web to generate back links.  Great Back links can only come from great content and great back links is the most important metric that Google uses to rank web pages.
